The Coming of the Holy Spirit

When (A)the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like (B)a mighty rushing wind, and (C)it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues (D)as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. And they were all (E)filled with the Holy Spirit and began (F)to speak in other tongues (G)as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And (H)at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And (I)they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking (J)Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and (K)Medes and (L)Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and (M)proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And (N)all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others (O)mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, (P)since it is only the third hour of the day.[b] 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 (Q)“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
(R)that I will pour out my Spirit (S)on all flesh,
and your sons and (T)your daughters shall prophesy,
    and your young men shall see visions,
    and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
    in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and (U)they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
    and signs on the earth below,
    blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 (V)the sun shall be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood,
    before (W)the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that (X)everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, (A)Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, (B)“Truly, truly, I say to you, (C)one of you will betray me.” 22 (D)The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 (E)One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table (F)at Jesus' side,[a] 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus[b] of whom he was speaking. 25 (G)So that disciple, (H)leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, (I)“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread (J)when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, (K)he gave it to Judas, (L)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, (M)Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, (N)“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, (O)because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need (P)for the feast,” or that he should (Q)give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. (R)And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, (S)“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and (T)God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, (U)God will also glorify him in himself, and (V)glorify him at once. 33 Little children, (W)yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just (X)as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 (Y)A new commandment (Z)I give to you, (AA)that you love one another: (AB)just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 (AC)By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” (AD)Jesus answered him, “Where I am going (AE)you cannot follow me now, (AF)but you will follow afterward.” 37 (AG)Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (AH)the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
